What You Should Know

In November of 2009, Anna Basso was diagnosed with a type of bone cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma. Specifically, it’s a tumour that develops in the bone, or surrounding tissues, that creates and allows the growth of abnormal or unhealthy cells that the body either doesn’t need, or has no room for. Often it spreads to other parts of the body.
Over the course of the following years different support groups were created by her friends and family to help her battle this cancer. One of the most prolific being 1 Million 4 Anna  which acted as Anna’s ‘Battle Standard’ in her fight. The group was a major, major support, and so were her friends, and all the people around her. Her school-mates at JPII (me included) tried constantly to help carry her burden, by spreading awareness, whether they were through small wrist-bands, or even whole concerts and showcases dedicated to Anna, and an awful-lot of praying. Her struggle with Ewing’s Sarcoma was constantly on the minds of her class-mates and teachers and in turn, they kept a sort of perpetual vigil.
Recently she passed away, yet, her friends, family, and even people around the nation who don’t even know her, but are part of her 1 million, continue to pray for her soul, her family, and others with the same disease.

I personally, didn’t know Anna Basso. I knew that she went to the same school as me, that I would occasionally see her in the hallways, and that I shared a math class with her our sophomore year. I knew her friends, and teachers, unfortunately though I never knew her.
But I do know that Anna Basso was one of the biggest inspirations of our time. To me, and to all those who ever had the honor and pleasure of knowing such a wonderful girl. I knew that she was a strong-willed young woman, who was able to continue her life even with the burden of a cancer such as Ewing’s Sarcoma. I know that she was gorgeous, and I say that in the most respectable way possible, and I know as a fact, for-sure, without a doubt, that she had the strongest-willed, tightest group of friends in the whole world.
I didn’t know her, so I don’t have much to say, but I do want to share this with all of you. To focus on, not the fact that she passed away, but the fact that she lived, with amazing friends, the support of over a million people, and their prayers who allowed her to live a relatively normal, and wonderful life.
I actually remember graduation, a few weeks ago, when Anna Basso was called up to the stage to receive her diploma, the crowd went absolutely mental! Everybody in the entire stadium stood up and cheered for what seemed to go on for at-least ten minutes, though we all still wanted to cheer more. I honestly started choking up. It just goes to show what kind of a girl she really was. Even if you didn’t know her you can see through her friends and supporters that she was an inspiration.
-
I remember when I was asked to paint her something awhile back. It was the words ‘Float On’. I was told that Float On by Modest Mouse was her favourite song, and sort of her ‘theme song’ and I can’t even begin to say how fitting that song was.
So here’s a poster I made with the words to a small part of the song, “even if things get a bit too heavy we’ll all float on”, because I personally feel that, that verse is the most meaningful in this situation. Make your own conclusions.
So here’s to you Anna. You lived a wonderful life, and though I only wish you had more time to enjoy it, I pray that you do rest in peace. Not because you might be disturbed, but rest in peace knowing that you left behind a legacy that will continue to be remembered for many, many years, and rest knowing that you will continue to be the inspiration for many more who learn of your story.
Float on Anna. Float on.
